STUDENTS INVITED TO CREATE THEIR OWN SUMMER JOBS

Program offers young entrepreneurs training and mentorship from local business leaders

Kingston, Ontario, April 23, 2019 — Kingston Economic Development Corporation announced that applications for Summer Company 2019 are currently being accepted until May 19. Students will be given the opportunity to start their own business throughout the summer months and will receive the training, support and mentorship required to start up a business in our community.

Funded by the Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, Kingston Economic Development Corporation has managed the Summer Company program since 2001. Participants receive hands-on business training with local business leaders and up to $3,000 in funding to make their business idea a reality. Province wide, more than 900 students will be participating in Summer Company.

Interested students must be between the ages of 15 and 29, enrolled in school for the fall of 2019, and able to dedicate at least 35 hours per week towards developing and running their business.

Summer Company assists students with gaining valuable business skills as well as develop their network of like-minded entrepreneurs and professionals. “With a background in teaching and a passion for supporting entrepreneurs, I can’t wait to work with all the talented youth this summer!” said Claire Bouvier, Small Business Advisor for Start-ups & Youth Business at Kingston Economic Development Corporation.

Kingston Economic Development Corporation will host open houses for students to learn more about the program on Thursday, April 25, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Fractal Workspace and Wednesday, May 1, from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM at VentureClub. Kingston EcDev Staff will be on site to offer support with applications and share resources available to help youth in business.

Summer Company participant from 2017, Cole MacDonald of Mero Technologies - an organization that brings predictive maintenance to the commercial cleaning industry, stated that while he was initially drawn to the program for its $3,000 grant, he quickly realized that the program offered even greater benefits. "The networking within Kingston was really valuable as well as the mentorship,” he said. “I think those are the two most valuable things.”

Another success story from the 2018 cohort was Kingston City Painting. The start-up focused on home improvement, especially painting and power-washing services. "I was able to accomplish all the goals I set for myself and more than I thought I would be able to achieve," said Ainsley Koven, founder of Kingston City Painting.

Students who wish to apply are encouraged to visit www.ygksummercompany.com and complete the eligibility questionnaire, then continue to the online application where they will fill in details about their business idea and provide contact information. Kingston Economic Development Corporation Business Development Officers are available for assistance in completing applications by emailing summercompany@kingstoncanada.com.

The province has allocated 10 program spots for youth living in Kingston and the surrounding area. Students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible as the application deadline is May 19, and the spaces are limited.
